For other long trips, you will want to make sure that the carrier has room for a food as well as water bowl. Through this the cat can eat at his leisure. You may also want to put in a puppy wee-wee pad, as the cat may not be able to use the litter box for some time. I always put in a towel or old blanket also, this helps the cat remain warm if he becomes cold. I also make sure that the blanket bears my smell or the cat's smell, to let it more comforting.
Remember that traveling is quite stressful for your cat. You will want to do everything you can to help it become as easy as possible for him. Be sure that he is comfortable and also well fed. In the car, speak soothingly to the cat, it will calm him down hearing your voice.
