About half of all people suffering from a hiatal hernia have serious problems with heartburn. If you are one of those unlucky 50%, you could adopt some appropriate measures to alleviate heartburn with a proper hiatal hernia diet.
But let's back up and explain precisely what a hiatal hernia is. There are two kinds, but the vast majority, or 95%, are called 'sliding hiatus hernias'. This is when the gastroesophageal junction moves above the diaphragm along with a part of the abdominal. This allows acid that should be in the stomach dissolving food to back up or rise up into your esophagus, and that leads to heartburn.
So there are many steps you could take in terms of diet regime to lessen your problem with heartburn. First, eat smaller meals. To make up for eating less, eat more often if you wish to. Never eat within two hours of your bedtime, and also make sure you sit up for at least an hour after you eat. Put simply, don't crash on the couch after a meal. Avoid alcohol consumption.
So does a diet for hiatal hernia have to be all bland foods, or really restrictive? No! Far from it. There are dozens of food items you could safely eat, so long as you avoid some key and known acid triggers. For example, apples and bananas are excellent foods for a hiatus hernia diet. Amongst the vegetables you can have are baked potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, green beans and peas.
What about animal meat? You can safely eat extra-lean ground beef, broiled steak, skinless chicken breast, egg whites or fish with no added fat. Can you see a pattern here? As little fat as possible! There are still other items you can eat as a part of a diet for haital hernia, including feta cheese, cream cheese, fat free sour cream or low fat soy cheese.
In the breads groups, select multi-grain, corn bread, Graham crackers or rice cakes. The most beneficial drink for a person with a hiatal hernia is good old water, but you can also safely partake of mineral water if you want a little extra jolt.
Drinks like coffee diet soft drinks, soft drinks, teas - all of those are out as they are acidic drinks, and you need less acid, not more. So eat less, avoid acidic foods, and stay upright for some time after you eat. Just a little common sense will free you from heartburn caused by hiatal hernia.
